The Library will be closed on all public holidays (including Poya Days). Library opening hours may differ during special occasions.

The UCSC Library provides its service to the staff and students of the UCSC. There are more than 1,400 registered library members. The library hosts more than 10,000 books and has a comprehensive collection of computer science books supported by the latest editions and books related to Statistics. At the library members can refer to books, journals, theses, dissertations and other resources such as magazines, newspapers and CDs, while accessing the internet in order to gather and update knowledge. There is a high demand for the theses and dissertation collection in the library as many users are doing research. The library has a reference area with a seating capacity of 137 and it also provides an electronic catelogy.

General Rules On The Use Of Library

  • Silence should be observed in the library.
  • Seats in the Library should not be reserved by anyone.
  • Readers are not allowed to do joint work in the reading areas.
  • Readers are allowed to remove any book they require from the shelves for use within the Library.
  • Readers should not replace any book on the shelves after using them but should hand them over to a member of the Library staff or leave them on the table provided.
  • Readers should not use Mobile Phones in the library.
  • No bags, cases, personnel books or any such belongings should be brought in to the Library. Only blank papers and printed paper notes are allowed.
  • Consumption of food or drinks/water is forbidden in the Library. Smoking is forbidden in the UCSC building complex.
  • Bottles of ink or ink wells should not be brought in to the Library.
  • The Library will not accept any correspondence or telephone calls on behalf of readers.
  • Any member of the staff of the Library is empowered to examine   books that readers carry with them when leaving the Library. The rules of the Library make it obligatory that the user complies promptly.
  • Project Reports are only for Reference Purposes (no photocopying is allowed) and should not be taken out of the Library
  • Those who are not registered to use this Library are required to obtain permission from the Director of UCSC to use the Library.

Readers must produce their University Identity Card when borrowing Books and at any time when called upon to do so.

Damage and loss of Library Books

Marking and defacing of books are strictly forbidden. Members should report any marks or damages already in the books to the issuing counter before taking out of library. In the absence of such notice the books will be presumed to have been in good condition when loaned, and the borrower will be held responsible and fined for any damages/marks observed at the time the books are returned. The borrower will be liable to pay the full cost of replacement of a book if it is damaged and any other fee that the UCSC considers applicable.

Loss of books should be reported immediately to the Library. If the book is not found and returned prior to the due date, the borrower shall pay for its replacement, plus a fine of 25% of the cost as a penalty.

The borrower shall pay the library fine from the due date until the replacement of the lost book, in addition to the above replacement cost penalty.

Eligibility to use

The right of using the Library is granted to the following readers under rules and procedures laid down elsewhere in this document.

  • Staff of UCSC and DST of the University of Colombo, UCSC and DST students registered for Undergraduate courses, Masters Programmes conducted by the UCSC, Research Degree Programmes in Computer Science of the UCSC.
  • Other persons for purpose of Special Study, approval is at the discretion of the Director of UCSC on a case by case basis.

Borrowing

 

Masters Courses (Computing)   One Book

Library tickets for borrowing of books are issued at the Library to members on the dates set apart for the registration of members. Members are required to produce their UCSC/UOC Identity cards to the library to obtain their library membership. UCSC students can use their UCSC identity card as their library ticket.

Disciplinary Actions

If library rules are violated

  • 1st time one week suspension of library membership
  • 2nd time one month suspension of library membership
  • 3rd time One semester suspension of library membership
  • 4th time Suspension of Library membership

Fines for Library Books / Loss of Library Books

 

The Board of management of the UCSC has decided to levy a fine from those who are not returning the library books on due dates as follows.

  1. If a book is not returned to the library on due date, borrower would be required to pay Rs. 20/= for the 1st day and Rs. 1/= for each additional hour until he/she returns the book to the library.
  2. If a book is lost and subsequently found, borrower would be required to pay the fine as specified above for the period from the due date to the date of the return of the book.
  3. If a book is lost and not found, the student concerned would be required to pay the cost of replacing the book with an additional penalty of 25% or replace the book. If the book is out of print or not available in the market replaced book should be approved by the library committee.

The UCSC reserves the right to deduct the dues to the Library before releasing the Library deposit at the end of a respective course.
