In striving for excellence in ICT education, the University of Colombo has always attempted to foresee the needs of the country as a whole and a department for Computer Science was established way back in 1985. Through this department the University of Colombo introduced Computer Science as a field of specialization and produced 18 batches of Software Engineers for the emerging software industry in Sri Lanka in addition to making fit the best of these for research and higher education. University of Colombo also responded to the ever increasing demand for IT professionals by the ICT industry at the end of the millennium by introducing the first external IT degree in the form of the BIT in 2000 which is now in its 10th batch. Since the establishment of University of Colombo School of Computing (UCSC) in 2002 training of Computer Science graduates has continued with a four times higher intake. Beginning in 2005, UCSC took a bold initiative to introduce an ICT degree programme to fill a widely felt gap in the industry for Information Systems Engineers – in recognition of the maturing of the field of Computer Science and Information and Communication Technology. This ICT degree allows students from any disciplines to enrol for the programme provided they fulfil the entry requirements. Two batches of the ICT degree programme have graduated and to recognise the academic performances of this degree programme three new awards are introduced.
A function was held at the UCSC on 1st July 2010 to handover money offered by three companies for the purpose of awarding gold medals at the annual convocation for those who excel in their academic activities of the ICT degree programme. IFS, Motorola & Sampath Bank come forward to offer gold medals for the "Best performance in 4 year degree", "Best performance in 3 year degree" and the "Best Fourth Year Project" respectively. These awards would be given at the Annual General Convocation of the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka starting from 2011.
