Sida Networking Project (1999-2002; 2003-2010)

The general purpose of the project is to improve the networking infrastructure in Sri Lankan Universities. Under this programme campus-wide networks have been constructed at the University of Colombo, University of Peradeniya, University of Ruhuna, while the inter-university backbone network (LEARN) was enhanced in its first phase, 1999-2002.

Phase II

Purpose: The main objectives of the Project are to develop the IT infrastructure of the local universities and installment of campus-wide computer networks and connectivity to the Internet.

Remark: 83% completed

During the 2nd phase, 2003-2010 (from 1st October 2003 to 30th September 2009 with fund utilization up to 31st December 2010), the University of Jaffna network was setup while each of the networks in the first phase is being upgraded for increased bandwidth requirements. All these networks are now self-financed and continue to serve the academic and research community in the country. Funding for this project ended in August 2010 with administration and few installation activities remaining. Project also assist to develop IT infrastructure in other universities.
